Prepare For Revolution, Archbishop Of Enugu Tell Nigerians

The Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Rev Emmanuel Chukwuma, on Tuesday called on Nigerians to prepare for a revolution.
Chukwuma,  who has constantly criticised  President Muhammadu Buhari’s management  style, spoke in an interview with our correspondent in Enugu.
According to him, the  poverty rate is high in the country  because of bad leadership.
He  said    the N30,000 new minimum wage would not   reduce poverty in Nigeria,  adding that  inflation would render  the new  pay  worthless.
The cleric said, “There  is hunger and  people are deprived   of  the basic necessities of life in Nigeria and the  N30,000 new  minimum wage, which amounts to N1,000 per day,  would not solve any problem.
“How would people pay for house rent, school fees, medical fees and other utilities which must be taken care of, let alone feeding themselves and their  families.”
Chukwuma said, “It is high time the expired and old politicians who have held Nigeria down left the stage so that we can have a new Nigeria of our dream where things work.”
He urged the Nigeria Labour Congress  to champion the revolution,  which, according to him,  is imminent.
He also  called for  the restructuring of  the country.
Chukwuma added,  “All  political appointments must reflect  federal character. Since the President and  his deputy  come from  the North-West and South-West respectively,  the position of the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives should go to other zones.”

Ayanfe-Oyebanjo said shortly after buying the food that some bystanders raised false alarm alleging that both men kidnapped the six year-old girl.
“Thereafter, the community did not bother to ask questions and immediately mobbed the two Nigerians.
“While they were being attacked, Nwudo kept on shouting that the girl was his daughter and pleaded that they speak to his South African wife to confirm his claim – which actually saved his life.

Fashola Seeks Elongation Of Works Minister’s Tenure-Says four years too short to design, build roads

Adedayo Akinwale in Abuja

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has called for the elongation of appointment of the Minister of Works and critical directors in the ministry, saying a four-year term is too short to design roads, undertake procurement and building the roads.

Fashola made the call yesterday in Abuja while unveiling a compendium on “Proof of Infrastructural Delivery across Nigeria,” a three-year special report of the ministry.

He stated: “Government cycles in the last 20 years have been fixed tenures of four years at a time, subject to how the electorate vote. Personnel changes are effected by retirement, deployment, opportunities and cabinet reshuffles. As a result, critical directors, permanent secretaries and ministers are turned over in a quest for efficiency.

“In all, since 1952 to date, Nigeria has had 34 ministers of works and I am number 34 in a period of 67 years. This amounts to an average of a minister every 1.9 years.

“A further interrogation of the data of tenure shows that very few of them served for up to four years and above and the majority served a little over a year, which is barely enough time to design a road not to talk of undertaking the procurement and actually building the road.”

He said the executive, legislative and judicial arms of government as a matter of urgency needed to forge a national consensus on how to overcome some of the challenges that the nation has faced in the delivery of urgently needed national infrastructure.

Fashola also called on the National Assembly to amend the Procurement Act, saying that the country’s procurement process must be urgent and be compelling to the national need.

Reeling out some of the achievements, on the road sector, the minister revealed that there is at least one federal road under construction in each of the 36 states and the FCT, saying while some have been completed, others are still under construction.

He gave reasons why President Muhammadu Buhari was re-elected, promising to take them to the Next Level and finish the job.

Fashola added that the housing sector has a similar story of economic opportunities with construction going on in 34 states, most of which are now largely completed, adding that the ministry was now in the administrative state of setting better conditions for eligibility and offer to the public, while simultaneously planning a second phase in those states that have given us land.

The minister noted that the ministry has cleared the backlog of unsigned consent to land transactions and issuance of certificates of transparency.

According to him, “As at April 13, 2019, we have issued 1,417 consents to land transactions; and 2,400 certificates of occupancy. Some of the beneficiaries have paid for their properties as far back as the 1990s; but did not get title. Very simply, we have made this place better than we met it. That is what our mandate for change meant and still means; making it better.”

The minister also explained that while the whole of Nigeria has focused on power from the grid for six decades in the search for a solution to the energy problem, the Buhari government has opened a new page through the ministry about the possibilities that lie in the off-grid sector.

Fashola said through this initiative and the Rural Electrification Agency, seven universities, two teaching hospitals are currently having their own independent power solution deployed at various states.

He stressed that preparatory works had been undertaken on all sites, while all the equipment have arrived in Nigerian ports and some have been cleared, while others are being attended to.

He said solar system and panels for the Ebonyi University have been installed and the plant would soon be completed.

Also, the Chairman, Senate Committee on works, Senator Kabir Gaya, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his commitment to infrastructural development, stressing that roads that have been abandoned for 18 years are now back on track, including Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa road.

On his part, the Chairman House Committee on Housing, Hon. Mahmoud Muhammed, said that the only reason while he won’t say the programme was coming late was because the president was re-elected, adding that the compendium was meant to inform Nigerians about the achievement of this government.

Earlier, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, said that the ministry has made his job easier than it could have been, adding that if there is no achievement there would be nothing to propagate.

A British Man Gives His Take On Corruption In Nigeria Photos

What I hate about corruption in Africa and specifically Nigeria is there is no real sense to it. The corruption paralyzes and destroys the countries internally. There is no sense to it. What is the sense in not having electrical power, roads, functioning hospitals? It is like corruption for the sake of corruption. I don't see any sense in it.

We have corruption in the west, sure. Most of it is making a buck. I mean, politicians will "skim" for a buck on shady construction deals, but the construction still gets done. Power company people will lie and steal, but we still have power. I can go on and on.
I remember reading that when we were rebuilding Korea (I have tried to find the link to this again but can't) that we tolerated a corruption rate of about 15% **so long as things were being rebuilt and the work was getting done.** That was a cost of doing business and I am not condoning it, but it was a reality.
The African corruption is sad because there is just no sense to it. Can't there be more money made if there is 100% power? If there are roads? If there are solid schools and hospitals? Just some of my observations on the corruption I see from afar.

Judge’s Absence Stalls Bala Mohammed's Arraignment

Bauchi State Governor to be Arraigned in Court

The absence of Justice Yusuf Haliru of an FCT High Court on Monday stalled the arraignment of the governor-elect of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed.

Mohammed, who was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, was scheduled to be arraigned on a fresh six counts, bordering on false declaration of assets and giving false information to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

At the court, Mohammed and his counsel and the EFCC counsel were present but the court did not sit because the judge, was on election petition duty in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Counsel for the EFCC, Mr Wahab Shittu, while speaking with newsmen, said:” the EFCC is an anti-corruption agency, it does not play politics.

“It exists to serve the public.”

On the arraignment, he said “It is a matter that was ongoing before another judge who has now been elevated to the Court of Appeal.

The expectation he said was that the matter would soon be reassigned to another judge.

“Just a week ago, the registry of this court sent us a notice that today has been fixed for the re-arraignment of the defendant.

“It was not at the instance of the court.

“You know when a case is transferred to another court, it starts de novo (afresh).”

He added that no one should see what was happening as an attempt by the EFCC to intimidate anyone.

“Let us focus on the matter before the court. EFCC exists to serve everybody,” he said.

Look Elsewhere, You’re Not From Sokoto –Group Tells Atiku

Contrary to his claim of Sokoto as origin, a group under the auspices of ‘Concerned Citizens of Sokoto State, has disowned the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Nigeria’s former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, saying that, he should look for his origin elsewhere and not Sokoto State.
The Sokoto State Coordinator of the Group, retired Squadron Leader Aminu Bala Sokoto, disclosed this when he addressed newsmen in Sokoto .

According to the former Airforce Senior Officer, “Atiku who is now over 72 years old has never associated himself with Wurno , headquarters of Wurno Local Government of Sokoto State, where he claims his grandfather hailed from .

“His false and atrocious claim is just coming now that he is being bogged down by a protracted electoral litigation sequel to the 2019 Presidential elections.

“He is now claiming to hail from Sokoto and Jigawa States. He has forgotten that, in 2003 he had maliciously described the people of Sokoto, Kano and the other North Western States as ungrateful power zealots”.

Retired squadron leader Aminu Bala Sokoto said the people of Wurno and by extension, Sokoto State are strongly and vehemently rejecting and dispensing Aitku Abubakar.

He challenged the defeated Presidential candidate to in the alternative substantiate his false claim by making public his ancestral family in Wurno town .

“Otherwise, he should look elsewhere and search for his origin and not anywhere near Wurno, in particular or Sokoto State in general.

Virgil Van Dijk Wins PFA Player Of The Year

Dutch duo Virgil van Dijk and Vivianne Miedema have won the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year awards for 2018-19 in the men and women categories respectively.

Liverpool defender Van Dijk, 27, beat Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Sergio Aguero, Sadio Mane and Eden Hazard in the vote by his fellow players.

Arsenal forward Miedema, 22, beat Steph Houghton, Nikita Parris, Keira Walsh, Erin Cuthbert and Ji So-Yun.

Manchester City forward Sterling won the men's young player prize.

City also provided winners for two other awards, with England forward Georgia Stanway claiming the women's young player prize and England captain
Houghton receiving the PFA Special Achievement award.

Van Dijk succeeds Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah, who won for 2017-18, and is the first defender to take the award since Chelsea centre-back John Terry in 2005.

Miedema, who helped Arsenal clinch their first Women's Super League title since 2012 earlier on Sunday, follows Chelsea and England striker Fran Kirby.

The rock at the heart of Liverpool's title challenge

Van Dijk has been one of the key players in Liverpool's ongoing title challenge this season, playing in every one of their Premier League fixtures.

Signed in January 2018 from Southampton for a world record fee for a defender of £75m, the Netherlands international has been a rock at the heart of the Reds' defence.

Liverpool have kept 19 clean sheets from the 36 league games in which Van Dijk has played this season, 28 of which they have won.

He has also contributed three goals and two assists during the campaign.

"It's the highest honour you can get as a player to get voted player of the year by the players you play against every week," said Van Dijk.

"It's special. I'm very proud and honoured to receive it."

Van Dijk could still end the season with a Premier League winner's medal as Liverpool currently trail Manchester City by a single point with two matches remaining.

Chelsea playmaker Hazard, who won in 2015, was also nominated alongside the City trio of Aguero, Silva and Sterling, and Van Dijk's Liverpool team-mate Mane.

Sterling goes close to senior prize but wins young player award instead

Many believed it was a two-horse race between Van Dijk and Sterling for the men's Player of the Year award.

Instead Sterling, 24, takes the young player prize, beating City team-mate Bernado Silva, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, Bournemouth midfielder David Brooks and West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.

He also succeeds City team-mate Leroy Sane in winning the award.

England international Sterling has enjoyed another extremely effective season for reigning champions Manchester City, scoring 17 goals and providing 10 assists.

He could end the season with a domestic treble of winner's medals, having already won the Carabao Cup with City, who lead the title race and face Watford in the FA Cup final on 18 May.

Sterling has also received recognition for his stance against racism in football this season, having criticised newspapers' portrayal of black players and calling for stronger punishments for supporters who racially abuse players.

Van Dijk wins BBC readers' and pundits' votes

Van Dijk was also the pick of both the BBC Sport readers and pundits.

The Dutchman received 56% of votes by BBC Sport readers, with Sterling in second place on 26%.
Tottenham forward Son Heung-min, who was not shortlisted for the PFA award, got 6% of votes in third.

Twenty-one pundits - Alan Shearer, Ian Wright, Alex Scott, Paul Ince, Phil Neville, Jermaine Jenas, Rachel Brown-Finnis, Stephen Warnock, Chris Sutton, Pat Nevin, Danny Mills, Mark Lawrenson, Martin Keown, Danny Murphy, Chris Waddle, Leon Osman, Sue Smith, Joleon Lescott, Mark Schwarzer, Matthew Upson and Kevin Kilbane - chose their top six performers of 2018-19.
Van Dijk and Sterling were their two outstanding candidates, with the former earning 14 votes to the latter's seven.

Both were selected in a PFA Premier League team of the year dominated by Liverpool and Manchester City players.

Van Dijk was joined by Reds team-mates Alexander-Arnold, Mane and Andrew Robertson, while Sterling has City colleagues Aguero, Silva, Ederson, Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte for company.

The only non-Liverpool or City player in the side is Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba - a selection that has been met with some criticism.

Raheem Sterling Wins PFA Young Player Of The Year

Sterling the PFA player of the year

Raheem Sterling’s stunning season for Manchester City has earned him the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Pep Guardiola’s treble-chasing side remain on course for a memorable league title this season, having tussled with Liverpool for the crown all campaign.

City reclaimed top spot in the Premier League on Sunday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Burnley , and now sit one point clear of their rivals with just two games remaining for each side.

Sterling has played an integral role in their title pursuit and was one of two City players on the six-man shortlist for this accolade, with team-mate Bernardo Silva joining him.

But it was the England superstar who collected the coveted trophy on Sunday at Grosvenor House in central London after a season which has seen him display his goalscoring prowess.

He has deservedly earned praise this season for his impressive displays on the pitch and for taking an active role in highlighting football's continued issue with racism.

Sterling has scored 17 Premier League goals this campaign, four behind Liverpool forward and Golden Boot pace-setter Mohamed Salah.
